Living in the Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI)
What is the Wildland Urban Interface (WUI)?
Do you live on the wild side?
If you live near wildlands, then you live on the wild side. An area does not have to be a big forest, grassland, or wilderness to be a wildland. Wildlands can be large or small in size. Where towns and cities meet natural and wild areas it is called the Wildland Urban Interface. Many of us live near wildlands, such as forests, parks, or wildlife areas, and don’t even realize it. If you live near a wildland, you live in the Wildand Urban Interface.
Wildfire, wildlife, woods, and water
Many of you have seen large wildfires on T.V. Very large fires can burn homes that are next to wildlands. Those of us who live next to wildlands need to know how to protect our homes from wildfire.
Living on the wild side means that we must be responsible. We must protect our homes from wildfire, use proper landscaping, protect the forests and the wildlife, and protect our clean water. We can also work with urban and community planners to develop communities that are more environmentally sensitive.
